Choosing a backpack by what you carry
A backpack is decided by two numbers: the litres it holds and the laptop it takes. Under 15 litres is a day pack — a laptop, a notebook, a charger and lunch. Between 20 and 30 it starts to swallow an overnight change of clothes, which is the size to take when a trip is one night and you would rather not check anything.
The laptop compartment matters more than the volume on a commute. A padded sleeve against the back panel keeps the weight close to your spine, which is what stops a full pack pulling at your shoulders after twenty minutes.
Leather holds its shape and takes a patina; canvas and waxed canvas are lighter and shrug off rain. Both are on these pages, and each product says which it is.
